It all started with a single dinner theatre production.
In 1972, Zula Holcomb Pearson retired as head of the Drama Department of Lon Morris College in Jacksonville, Texas. With too much talent and too much love of theatre to truly retire, she agreed to direct an original drama, “Rusk Legends”. The community members who participated in the production as both actors and audience had too much fun to stop there.
What was to become Cherokee Civic Theatre, Inc. was founded in 1972 by that group of theatre lovers who wanted to perform and watch performances of “the best of Broadway shows, original scripts and other quality productions”. Now, CCT produces four shows each season as well as original one-acts in the TNT summer camp - and anything else we can squeeze into the schedule. And, if the theater is in use, we’ve been known to take the show on the road.
Over the years, CCT has remained dedicated to Mrs. Pearson’s vision of promoting all the theatre arts, including playwriting. A number of our seasons have featured original dramas, comedies and revues.
A chronology of the shows performed at Cherokee Civic Theatre is now available. We’re steadily increasing our archives to include show photos and performance credits. If you were ever involved onstage at CCT, please contact us at information@cheroketheatre.net. We may need your consent to include show photos in the Archives.
