The main plot of Granny's Little Cheery Room revolves around Granny Painsberry's preparations to be taken up to Heaven by her late husband, Lute, who has been there for some time. Believing her time has come, Granny sets about making her last will and testament. Her final wish is for a little playroom to be added to Orry and Lessie's new house.

The central humorous turn of the play occurs when Lute ultimately fails to show up to take her to Heaven as expected, leaving Granny and her family to deal with the aftermath of her premature preparations.
